On the road of parenting,
having some reliable “training wheels” can help boost our
confidence and help maintain our balance. The Parenting
Network’s team of program coordinators, facilitators and child
care workers can support you
with training programs to better
equip you on your parenting journey.
All programs are offered free of charge for Catawba
County residents, and most
programs provide free qualified child care and snacks or
meals for families. Many
of the Network programs are also offered in Spanish and

1,2,3,4 PARENTS

Focus: Children ages 1 - 4
3 weekly sessions - 2 hours each session

Are you a first-time parent?
1,2,3,4 Parents is a great
orientation to your new job!
Program topics include: your
child’s development; differences
in parenting styles; effective
ways to discipline your child
without violence; bonding, setting
routines, and giving choices;
child-proofing your home; and
caring for yourself.

ACTIVE PARENTING NOW

Focus: Children ages 5 - 12
6 weekly sessions - 2 hours each session
 |
Raising your child to meet the
challenges of the teen years ahead
can be an uphill climb. Active
Parenting Now can help. At this
class, you will learn to avoid power
struggles and to master skills for
developing cooperation,
responsibility, courage and
self-esteem in your child.

STRENGTHENING

Focus: Children ages 3 - 18
13 weekly sessions - 3 hours each session

Learn how to strengthen your
family as you explore your
family’s “culture” and values;
identify your child’s temperament
and unique characteristics;
discover keys to creating special
relationships with your child;
master a “process” of positive
discipline; and learn how to help
your child build solutions and
develop a support system.

PARENT TO PARENT

Focus: Children ages 8 - 15
4 weekly sessions - 2 hours each session

Guiding your child through the
preteen and teen years can be a
bumpy ride. Parent to Parent helps
you better understand your role in
preventing “risky behaviors.”
Topics include: characteristics of
effective parents; prevention
through intervention; awareness of
attitudes, behaviors, and
environment;
freedom and trust; family belief
systems; and communicating in
“feeling” terms.

Focus: Infants - Preteens

16 - 20 weekly sessions
2˝ or 3 hours each session

This program, offered
through the Department
of Social Services,
helps you to parent your
child with empathy;
provides helpful “ages
and stages” child
development information;
and emphasizes positive,
non-violent discipline
and healthy parent-child
communication. |

POSITIVE DISCIPLINE

Focus: Children ages 3 - 10
4 weekly sessions - 2 hours
each session

Are you tired of temper tantrums
and time outs? This workshop is
for you! Examine the many
causes/influences of behavior;
better understand your child’s
thinking stage; and learn several
effective positive discipline
tools.

The Catawba County Parenting Network is
affiliated with Catawba County Schools, Hickory City Schools,
Newton Conover Schools, Catawba Valley Community College and Catawba
Valley Medical Center.

Created in 1999, the Catawba County Parenting Network is primarily
funded by the Catawba County Partnership for Children (Smart Start)
and is a program of Catawba County Schools. The Network works with
families in Catawba County Schools, Newton-Conover Schools and
Hickory Public Schools. Additional funding for the Network is
provided by the Beaver Family Foundation, Catawba County United Way,
Catawba Valley Medical Center, The Department of Juvenile Justice,
